MarkWest Lays Roots and Keeps Its Promise to Ohio with New Cadiz Office

In August 2012, MarkWest hosted a meet and greet with the residents and officials of Harrison County, announcing their plans for Utica Shale development in eastern Ohio. This week, the company continues to keep the promise it made three years ago, and as they cut the ribbon of a 20,000 square foot corporate office in Cadiz, Ohio. The event also served as a reminder that MarkWest has invested over $2.5 billion to date in Ohio, and is employing local residents in the community.

Case-in-point: As evidence that MarkWest is committed to hiring local residents, the open house and ribbon cutting was kicked off by Office Administrator, Melissa “Missy” Yoho, a local resident of the area, and mother of 5, who stands with 110 permanent employees who will work out of the new corporate office. This commitment to hiring local employees is proof that MarkWest is putting Ohio back to work, creating jobs, and driving down unemployment in the…

The Point to get $1M for college programs

SOUTH POINT, Ohio – The current Ohio Senate version of the two-year budget proposal starting July 1 includes $1 million to develop college technical programs at The Point, a South Point industrial park.

The budget bill, which includes $500,000 per year for the next two years for the job training program, still has to be agreed to by the state legislature and signed by Gov. John Kasich by June 30.

State Sen. Bob Peterson said the Senate bill includes money to pay for an economic development initiative that will bring new employment opportunities at the industrial park.

“This is a collaborative initiative through Ohio University Southern in Ironton to establish a Higher Education Regional Partnership and Training Center at The Point to bring necessary technical degree and training programs to Lawrence County and the surrounding region,” Peterson said.

The training center is a partnership between Ohio University Southern, Shawnee State University, University of Rio…

Diane Hopkins, who has worked at the Columbus Washboard Factory for five years, demonstrates how the washboards are assembled. Once the pieces are made, the washboards themselves can be put together in as little as 45 seconds.

LOGAN — A local staple of the community, the Columbus Washboard Company, is celebrating an auspicious milestone this year as the company turns an incredible 120 years old.

According to the history of the Columbus Washboard Company, it was officially started when Frederic Martin Sr. started building washboards for resale from his backyard in 1895.

He would continue to hand make the washboards over the next 30 years, and though no sales information is available, it is estimated that fewer than 1,000 washboards were made and sold during that time.

Everything changed in 1925 when Martin’s son, Frederic Martin Jr., purchased the company…
